AGRICULTURAL LAND DRAINAGE
ARC Ground Care provide field drainage and pipeline reinstatement. With our farming origins, agricultural drainage is an area that we have expertise in and believe is essential to maximise utilisation of grass.
The benefits of good drainage include:
-
- Improving the drainage can make the difference between crop success and failure in our every increasing sporadic wet months of the year. A good drainage system is a long term investment and could reduce the amount of potential flooding on farm land. With installed drainage, we anticipate more timely access to land in the spring.
-
- Higher crop yields
-
- Better opportunities for cultivation during spring and autumn months and increasing livestock grazing periods.
-
- Fields are more resistant to the pressure of vehicle tyres.
-
- Soil temperature directly affects plant growth therefore drainage reduces soil specific heat capacity and can lead to increased soil temperature.
- Warmer soil temperatures lead to more efficient use of applied fertilisers and roots will absorb nutrients more readily. These expensive fertilisers will also have a reduced run off where drainage has been installed.
TYPES OF AGRICULTURAL DRAINAGE
Types of Agricultural drainage:
- Surface Drainage – Typically constructs open type ditches to convey water from waterlogged areas or those with excess water to areas requiring it or natural rivers/runoff zones.
- Open ditch drains – They generally follow irregular patterns and contour the land.
- Narrow ditches – Farmers commonly employ this type of agricultural drainage ditch in areas where large farm machinery is not utilised.
- Field ditches – Engineers purposefully design and place them, usually with deep, V-shaped, or vertical sides and narrow tops, enabling easy crossing by heavy farm machinery.
- Subsurface Drainage – This option, though more costly, represents a long-term investment. Underground systems are engineered to eliminate excess water from the soil and offer several advantages over surface drainage systems.
-
- Box drains
- Pipes/tile drains
- Rubble – gravel or coarse stones can provide subsurface drainage areas.
- Mole drains – are particularly useful in heavier clay soils and commonly used in Europe
- Drainage pumps
